Thinking about Switching from eRoom to Sharepoint?
Content can be migrated from eRoom to Sharepoint without any issues, but unfortunately the context of information will be lost in many cases, as well as the function of some eRoom items. Thus the usability of the migrated content will be significantly limited and questions the overall migration. The following case study of a world leading mobile telecommunication company located in Duesseldorf gives a high level picture of this challenge.
Situation
The challenge of this project was to completly migrate an eRoom V7 system to MS Office Sharepoint Server 2007 and to ensure the usability of the content.
A first analysis on feature level showed, that eRoom:
- provides much more functional items then MS Sharepoint does
- provides nested item structures as a core feature, which doesn´t exist that way in MS Sharepoint
There are two major consequences resulting out of these findings:
- Content of some eRoom Items could be migrated, but after migration there would be no usable function anymore, besides the content
- The missing capability of MS Sharepoint to have these unique nested structures, the context of content will be lost in too many cases and therefore content gets useless or has to be manually moved into the right context
Based on this major findings three migration approaches have been validated based on usability.
